Model Essay #1:

Without capital punishment (the death penalty) our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increase. Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

In today's society, the topic of capital punishment remains a contentious issue. Some argue that without the death penalty, our lives are less secure, and violent crimes increase. They believe that capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. However, I disagree with this opinion.

Firstly, there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to violent crimes. In fact, according to a study conducted by the National Research Council in the United States, there is no credible evidence that capital punishment deters homicide rates. Therefore, the argument that it is essential for controlling violence lacks empirical support.

Moreover, the use of capital punishment raises ethical concerns. The risk of executing innocent individuals and the irreversible nature of the punishment make it a flawed system. In an imperfect justice system, the possibility of wrongful convictions cannot be overlooked. Instead of enhancing security, the death penalty may perpetuate injustice and erode public trust in the legal system.

Furthermore, countries that have abolished the death penalty have not experienced a surge in violent crimes. For instance, in European countries where capital punishment has been abolished, crime rates have not skyrocketed. This suggests that alternative measures such as effective law enforcement, rehabilitation programs, and addressing social inequalities are more impactful in reducing crime.

In conclusion, I firmly disagree with the notion that capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. The lack of evidence supporting its deterrent effect, ethical concerns, and the experiences of countries that have abolished it demonstrate that there are more effective ways to ensure security and reduce violent crimes.

Model Essay #2:

Without capital punishment (the death penalty) our lives are less secure and crimes of violence increase. Capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

In today's society, the issue of capital punishment continues to spark debates regarding its effectiveness in controlling violence. Some argue that without the death penalty, our lives are less secure, and crimes of violence increase. They believe that capital punishment is essential to control violence in society. I partially agree with this opinion.

Firstly, the threat of capital punishment can act as a deterrent to potential offenders. The fear of facing the ultimate consequence for committing heinous crimes may dissuade individuals from engaging in violent acts. This deterrent effect can contribute to maintaining public safety and deterring individuals from resorting to extreme violence.

Moreover, the death penalty serves as a form of justice for the victims and their families. In cases of egregious crimes, the imposition of capital punishment can provide a sense of closure and retribution for the affected parties. It can send a powerful message that society does not tolerate severe acts of violence, thereby upholding the value of human life and deterring potential offenders.

Furthermore, the existence of the death penalty can help maintain order and security within the prison system. Inmates who have committed violent crimes may be less likely to engage in further acts of violence or escape attempts if they are aware of the consequences they may face. This contributes to a safer environment for both prison staff and other inmates.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the potential benefits of capital punishment in deterring violent crimes and providing justice, I also recognize the ethical and practical challenges associated with its implementation. Therefore, while the death penalty may contribute to controlling violence in society to some extent, it should be applied judiciously and with careful consideration of its implications.
