Model Essay #1:

Life is now better that it was 100 years ago. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Life today is undoubtedly better than it was a century ago. I strongly agree with this statement due to significant advancements in technology, healthcare, and living standards. Firstly, technological progress has transformed every aspect of our lives. A hundred years ago, people had limited access to information and communication, but now, with the internet and smartphones, the world is at our fingertips. For example, in the past, letters took weeks to reach their destination, but now, we can send emails instantly. This has improved efficiency and connected people globally.

Secondly, healthcare has vastly improved, leading to longer and healthier lives. A century ago, diseases such as tuberculosis and polio were widespread, with limited treatment options. Today, medical advancements have eradicated many diseases, and treatments for various illnesses have improved, leading to a decline in mortality rates. For instance, vaccines have been developed to prevent deadly diseases, significantly improving public health.

Moreover, living standards have risen significantly in the last century. Access to clean water, electricity, and sanitation has become commonplace, improving overall quality of life. In the past, these amenities were considered luxuries, but now they are basic necessities. For example, in many parts of the world, poverty rates have decreased, and more people have access to education and employment opportunities, leading to improved living conditions.

In conclusion, life today is undoubtedly better than it was a hundred years ago. Technological advancements, improved healthcare, and better living standards have significantly enhanced our lives. While challenges still exist, the overall progress made in the past century indicates a remarkable improvement in the quality of life for people worldwide.

Model Essay #2:

Life is now better that it was 100 years ago. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

While it is undeniable that significant progress has been made in various aspects of life over the past century, I disagree with the notion that life is now better than it was a hundred years ago. Despite advancements in technology and healthcare, there are certain aspects of life that have declined, leading to a more challenging and complex existence.

Firstly, the rapid advancement of technology has led to increased stress and mental health issues. With the constant connectivity and pressures of the digital age, people often feel overwhelmed and anxious. A century ago, life was simpler, with less emphasis on constant productivity and digital distractions. For example, in the past, people had more time for leisure activities and social interactions, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Furthermore, the rise of environmental challenges and climate change has significantly impacted the quality of life. A hundred years ago, pollution and environmental degradation were not as severe as they are today. The overexploitation of natural resources and the increase in pollution have led to adverse effects on the planet and human health. For instance, air and water pollution have become major concerns, affecting the well-being of communities worldwide.

Additionally, social and economic inequalities persist despite overall progress. While some have benefited from advancements, many others continue to face poverty, discrimination, and lack of access to essential resources. A century ago, communities were more tightly knit, and support systems were stronger, leading to a sense of belonging and solidarity. Today, societal disparities and divisions have widened, leading to increased social tensions and injustices.

In conclusion, while there have been remarkable advancements in technology and healthcare, life today is not necessarily better than it was a hundred years ago. Increased stress, environmental challenges, and social inequalities have posed significant challenges to the overall well-being of individuals and communities. It is essential to acknowledge the complexities of modern life and work towards addressing these pressing issues for a truly improved quality of life.
